Holiday Entitlements

November 2007 - The respondents were asked whether they planned to take their full holiday entitlement by the end of their employer's holiday year. The majority (64%) told us they planned to do so. Almost a third (29%) were not planning to take their full entitlement but were able to carry forward outstanding days. Some 7% stood to lose holiday because their employers did not allow them to carry forward outstanding days.

What is particularly interesting is that some 81% of those workers who did not plan to take their full holiday entitlement but could carry these days forward, told us they were happy at work. This drops to 75% of those who could not carry forward holiday and 79%, the overall survey happiness result, of those who plan to take their full entitlement.

What is emerging is a picture of flexibility on both sides. UK office workers appear to be happy to work fairly long hours but welcome an flexible approach by the employers on those hours and holiday entitlement.
